Gym membership or a Wii?
Hot damn. In today’s world, being fit is a must. Someday we’ll all turn back into monkeys after being exposed to radiation then being the alpha male monkey will definitely be very crucial to one’s survival. I know a few people who are so into BMIs and strength training that the next most important thing to them aside from breathing air would be their pecs (or abs or biceps…).
I have to admit that I am trying to be a fitness nerd yet again, counting calories and trying to squeeze in a few minutes of exercise since I have successfully gained back the 10 lbs I lost last year with a few more lbs to boot. Goddamn holidays. But with a busy schedule and the pressure to earn, it is quite tough to carry a good routine.
Then again, I have been thinking about gifting myself a Nintendo Wii. Aside from it taking the brunt off of my PCs for gaming, I’ve read that it’s a good exercise machine as well with Wii Sports. But the money I could spend on a Wii might as well fund a gym membership for a whole year. Or just buy me some exercise equipment I can use at home.
How good is the Wii anyway?
According to a BBC report:
Based on the average gaming week of 12.2 hours, this translates to a potential 1,830 calories burned per week when using Wii - 40% more than when using a traditional format console.
Doing the math, this would translate to burning off a pound per two weeks. It offers a measly rate of 2.5 cals burned per minute of playing. That means I’d be better off shooting hoops for an hour a day. Unless of course, I end up playing Wii for 8 hours a day.
