The Nintendo Wii revolutionized the gaming world because of the new level of interactivity it brought through its motion controlled interactivity. With that, the Wii took Nintendo back into the gaming ball game after disappearing post-GameCube.
Microsoft and Sony wouldn’t have none of that though, as they plan to take away Nintendo’s competitive advantage by introducing their own motion controllers for the Xbox and the Playstation in the recent E3 event.
Microsoft call theirs “Project Natal” and Sony dubbed theirs the “Eye.” Quite interesting but they wouldn’t change the fact that Nintendo beat them to the game. These additions of motion controllers now challenges Nintendo’s technologies. The combination of motion control with the Xbox and PS’s advanced graphics is quite potent.
Competition’s always good though since it would push the boundaries of interactive gaming to the next level.
Oh gosh, I remember the days when I used to watch “My So-called Life” (read better-version of Tree Hill) to while away Sunday afternoons and then feeling angsty ( read emo) afterwards because I so could relate to Claire Daines‘ (read as Ellen Paige of the 90’s) character? So to avoid going Kurt Cobain (read as Patrick Stump –> which doesn’t even come close), I’d listen to Pearl Jam and STP on this:
Even if I’m not much of a gamer. Still! These lucky folks who attended the Tokyo Game Show in Chiba, last September 20 got to try out Sony’s PlayStation 3 for free.
Yep, they’re not exactly giving them away for free, silly. But then again, news states that Sony will launch a cheaper model of its PlayStation 3 in the US (what about the Philippines?!), so as to go up against rival game consoles from Microsoft (Xbox) and Nintendo (Wii).
Analysts have projected cuts on PS3 prices. While this is good news for consumers like us (but I’d rather buy me a Wii), it isn’t good news for PS3 manufacturer Sony at all.
According to this report from Bloomberg, the PS3 may probably give Sony it’s biggest loss in the console market. As we all know, Sony became the victor of the console wars with the Playstation and proved to be a force with the second incarnation, PS2.
Here’s what the report says:
The net loss at Tokyo-based Sony may have widened to 75.8 billion yen ($630 million) in the fiscal fourth quarter ended March 31, from 66.5 billion yen a year earlier, according to the median estimate of 11 analysts surveyed by Bloomberg. Sales probably rose 9.5 percent to 2.02 trillion yen, the survey showed.
…
Sony will probably fall short and generate an operating margin of 4.1 percent, according to the survey. Last fiscal year, Sony had an operating profit of 80 billion yen, or 1 percent of sales, the survey showed.
Production delays for PlayStation 3 have left Sony in third place in worldwide sales of the newest generation of consoles behind Nintendo’s Wii and Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox 360. Sony is still the world’s biggest console maker because of sales of its older PlayStation 2 machines.
In any case, time will only tell whether the PS3 will still be the lemon of consoles today. I still think it’s a cheap-o Blu-ray player. However, since Sony will not be licensing porn on Blu-ray, I just might still push for a Wii. And as of now, Wii is kicking PS3’s arse (Yey for Nintendo!). Billy Gates and Microsoft should be happy coming with how the Xbox is faring.
I guess Sony overestimated its power to sell the latest version of its popular game console, the Playstation. Apparently, only half of the six million PS3 that Sony has manufactured has also been sold to date. Although Sony has issued a statement that they would not be reducing the PS3’s price for the next two years, analysts still predict otherwise.
