ToyCon 2008

Flori with ToyCon souveneirs
The 7th Philippine Toys, Hobbies and Collectibles Convention
Event date: June 14-15, 2008
Megatrade Hall 2-3, SM Megamall
Organized by Collectibles Unlimited Assoc

I went to the ToyCon and all I bought was a PERV shirt and an epal puppet. I was and am quite happy with my purchases since I got them from the booth manned by friends. I only got to attend the second day though due to work.

There were all kinds of booths for toy collectors, enthusiasts, and hobbyists. Local indie comic artists were given spots to pimp their graphic wares. Gamers had their own space where they could bash one another’s brains out in virtual world. There were contests galore, band performances (did they just play Love Song by The Cure?), and meet-and-greet segments (sayang, di ko nakita si Marian!). Of course, it was the cosplayers who caught the attention of the attendees (not to mention the mall-going public in general).

I also met my senpais and other friends at some points during the day.

Ace was there to cosplay Resident Evil (complete with a zombie) with a group. Awesome zombie, dude!

Direk Mike, Jo-senpai, Poli-senpai, Rael-senpai, Hazel (a.k.a. Misao), and Ria (the latter two of Progeny) were there to cosplay Macross. Roch-senpai, Miao-senpai, and Jerry as their support system.

We should have gotten pictures where the Macross team was in character but there simply was no time. We just had to make do with those where they were still chatting in their usual persona. Hahaha!

Sayang!

Yotsuba invades ToyCon 2008

By Flori on June 16, 2008

Remember Yotsuba?

We spotted her spotting toys at the 7th Philippine Toys, Hobbies and Collectibles Convention. She seemed like she was enjoying herself and not necessarily violent, thank goodness.

Otakai Banner

One of the booths at last weekend’s ToyCon 08 was that of Otakai - a forum that is home to mostly, but not exclusively, Pinoy toy and figure collectors.

As stated on their site:

The OtaKai Figure Society aims to be a “universal hub” in providing information for upcoming anime figures, to enthusiasts and collectors alike…This is achieved through the collective efforts of all the members in searching, cataloging and providing related backgrounds on various figure releases…The society also aims to promote the “awareness” of buying authentic figures and collectibles instead of “bootlegs”…

The name of this community is based on two words: – “Otaku” which describes people who have interests and hobbies related to japanese anime, manga, videogames, anime figures, j-idols and the like…- “Kaibigan” is a Tagalog word which translates to “friend” or “comrade”…
Thus, “OtaKai” stands for “otaku friends”…

The society was founded by a group of friends who share the same interests and hobbies, primarily anime figure-collecting…Built on the foundation of “comraderie”, OtaKai strives to achieve two ideals: “community” and “transparency”…As a community, the opinions and ideas of all members are not just “heard” but also “recognized”…Through transparency, we aim to administer and moderate the forums openly and with accountability…

The forum was opened to the public on March 1, 2008.

What people didn’t know was that we smuggled guests in Solomon’s Paradise. I think they had as much fun as us legit ones had. Maybe even more?
