Watchmen Director's Cut

I liked Watchmen all because I am a fan of the graphic novels. That’s why I got to appreciate the details and all. But given a non-fan point of view, it’s way too long and way too messy to be regarded as a good film. It’s a graphic novel supplement at best.

Now who wants to see the Director’s Cut? It’s still a couple of months down the line (release date’s on July 25) but details have been revealed about the cut that will be appearing on DVD and Blu-ray.

The cut will feature 25 more minutes of Rorschach and a few more details. Blu-ray buyers will be treated to a Maximum Movie Mode that plays a whole lot of commentary, details, and even pages of the graphic novel appearing on the side. The Blu-ray release will also feature the following:

  • A feature on the mechanics and science behind Watchmen.
  • A real-world timeline that examines our universe as compared to that of the film.
  • The 25 extra minutes.
  • Production stills and concept art.
  • A look at the psychology behind vigilantism and heroism.
  • A much-needed, revolutionary “Pause” feature which allows you to go to the bathroom or get a drink without missing a second of the movie.

So is it high time to invest on a Blu-ray player (or a PS3)? Maybe.

Spore

If you think that Maxis and EA have neglected Nintendo platforms for their Spore game lineup, fret not. Maxis has announced details about Spore Hero and Spore Hero Arena – two games that will be developed exclusively for the Wii and DS platforms.

Exclusive releases are always a good thing since they do tend to maximize the platforms unique technologies. For the Wii and the DS, expect the games to exploit the interactivity factors of both games. Ported games usually just provide token use of controls which aren’t usually as fun and that’s what these new Spore titles will try to evade.

Spore Hero will be the exclusive title for the Wii. It will be a story driven game where the Hero embarks onn an epic quest to save the world. Storyline might be cliche but hey, this is Maxis and the Wii controls will surely account for something really fun. For the Wii, Spore Hero Arena will feature an arena-based combat featuring a Spore gladiator Hero.

Duke Nukem Forever

Duke Nukem (among other classic PC games) will go down in my personal history as one of the first gaming addictions I had. That was fifteen freaking years ago with my old 386 computer. Then Duke Nukem 3D came out and became a must-play for hormonally-raging adolescent due to pixelated flaming titties – a real upside compared to the old Doom titles.

Kudos to 3D Realms for that (and for developing the shareware concept and FPS granddaddy Wolfenstein 3D). News has been around that the company is developing a Duke Nukem follow-up dubbed Duke Nukem forever. But all dreams of that coming out dies as 3D Realms calls it quits.

Lack of funds has been cited as the reason behind the pulled-plug. But talk about slug-paced software development for this one. Duke Nukem Forever had been in development for 12 years and has earned the ridicule of the whole industry. Publisher Take-Two Interactive will remain to have publishing rights but there seems to be no hint of the game ever making it out.

It would’ve been nice if Duke Nukem Forever had been 3D Realms’ last hurrah. Too bad they made a total hash of things.

Windows 7 RC 1 out now

By Datenshi on May 5, 2009

The first release candidate (RC1) for Microsoft’s next OS has been released for beta testing. As a beta test, downloading it is free and only requires a valid Windows Live ID (i.e. a Hotmail account will do). Full download instructions are here.

As expected Microsoft is not giving away free licenses of their OS without a catch: this version of Windows 7 comes with two expiration dates:

Watch the calendar. The RC will expire on June 1, 2010. Starting on March 1, 2010, your PC will begin shutting down every two hours. Windows will notify you two weeks before the bi-hourly shutdowns start. To avoid interruption, you’ll need to install a non-expired version of Windows before March 1, 2010. You’ll also need to install the programs and data that you want to use.

You have to give them credit, though. Ten months isn’t that long, but it should be enough to help you decide whether to upgrade to Windows 7 or stick with Vista.

Star Trek D-A-C trailer

By Alex on May 5, 2009

Lookie here. Trekies are undoubtedly clenching their bumholes for the much anticipated J.J. Abrams Star Trek reboot. Whether it will be a travesty or not, we’ll only know once it hits the theaters later this week. But let’s have something to whet our Star Trek dose for the day. Here’s one for Trekie gamers.

Coming to the Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network is Star Trek D-A-C. Don’t bother if you’re looking for ways to control Spock and finally relive your sick fantasies of contorting his CG player character against Kirk, D-A-C’s straight up spaceship shooter. Here’s the first trailer from GameTrailers.

I don’t get to see US commercials that often and I do like how the US media allows for more cushion when it comes to creativity and risque. While this World’s Most Interesting Man in the World series of Dos Equis commercial, isn’t really risque in terms of sexiness , the series has some pretty amazing word play and interesting visuals.

More about the man after the cut.
