Wolverine Hugh Jackman

X-Men Origins: Wolverine has got to be one of the biggest disappointments this year. I wanted to slot in Transformers and G.I. Joe but since my expectations for both movies not so high as what I had for Wolverine, they don’t seem to quite cut it as disappointments.

Wolverine was such a waste of the talents of Hugh Jackman, Liev Schreiber and even for a cameo – Ryan Reynolds. If anything, it’s almost two hours of teasers for possible future projects. But it did well at the box office. So well that producers want to milk Wolvie’s franchise through a sequel.

Word has it that Christopher McQuarrie will be involved in the sequel. If his name’s not familiar, his credits include many collaborations with director Bryan Singer and writing screenplays for Public Access, The Usual Suspects, X-Men (uncredited), The Way of the Gun, and Valkyrie. I’m not a big fan of his more recent works but The Usual Suspects rocked so maybe there’s hope for the sequel.

The sequel is also reported to tap Frank Miller and Chris Claremont’s Wolverine #1-4 so that would mean Wolvie’s being shipped to Japan. Whether that would mean meeting the likes of The Hand, Yukio, Silver Samurai or perhaps a love angle with Mariko Yashida, we’ll know eventually but we’re putting these as very likely.

Iron Man 2 footage leaked

Iron Man 2 Set

The thing about Comic-Con is that studios and directors often give fans a really good preview of what’s coming. This leaked footage from Iron Man 2 supposedly contains the basic plot and a twist to the story.

I haven’t seen this personally. Good thing YouTube allows you to get the embed code without having to watch the damn thing.

SPOILER ALERT!

G.I. Joe rakes in big bucks

By Alex on August 10, 2009

Sienna Miller The Baroness

Other Sugoi staff members might not share my sentiments regarding G.I. The Rise of Cobra but it was awful. Sure it had a lot of explosions and some good action but a sketchy storyline and unestablished and undeveloped characterizations blew it for me. What a way to disappoint a guy who grew up loving G.I. Joe as a kid.

Channing Tatum as Duke was basically a robot. Marlon Wayans as Ripcord came off as a teen movie token black guy character. Heck, even Joseph Gordon-Levitt supposedly okay take on Cobra Commander was ruined by the lack of establishment and Darth Vader twist at the end.

I’d have to say that Sienna Miller as The Baroness was the only thing worth watching for the most part of the movie and they even blew that in the twist late in the movie. I prefer my sexy black-haired leather-clad villainesses wicked through and through, thank you very much. Wapish!

It’s just one of those revival of the 80s centered on making Hasbro some big bucks from the geeks of the new generation. And rake in big bucks it did. It made $56 million in the opening but experts worry about it breaking even especially with the reported $175 million price tag on making it.

Iron Man 2 SDCC Trailer

Iron Man 2 Teaser from SDCC

Here’s a camera recording of the teaser trailer for Iron Man 2 shown during the recent San Diego Comic Con. Watch it while it’s still up. :)

Superheroes having coffee in their suits is a plus in my fangirl book. Stark, still snarky as ever. And oh, watch until the end ;)

Lost actor as The Black Panther?

By Alex on August 3, 2009

With the hundreds of characters in the Marvel Universe, we don’t see comic-book-based movies slowing down any time soon. But before Marvel settle for minor characters, they’re picking off their major ones first.

In the works is The Black Panther. Finally, we’d have a film version featuring the king of Wakanda (fictional African nation). Marvel has yet to name who’ll be crowned as T’Challa but word has it that Lost actor Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje is already in discussions with Marvel.

But these are all just rumors for now. Other actors hinted to play the role are Chiwetel Ejiofor, Djimon Honsou, and even Wesley Snipes.

Adewale will also be seen later this month in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. Here’s an interview from MTV.

Jeremy Renner to Play Mad Max?

By Alex on August 3, 2009

Jeremy Renner

Now I didn’t get to watch Mad Max as a kid but due to Fallout, I got to revisit the whole Mel Gibson post-apocalyptic vehicle.

It has been 30 years since the first film came out and earlier this year, there were talks about an R-rated 3D anime feature film. (You might think it’d be an Akira rip-off but as far as the post-apocalyptic concept goes, Mad Max came first.)

Most recently, co-creator and director George Miller announced that a live action film will also be in the works. And the actor reported to possibly take up Gibson’s place as Mad Max – Jeremy Renner. You might remember him from films like SWAT, The Assassination of Jesse James, and 28 Weeks Later.

“I’m also fighting to do the new Mad Max film with George Miller. That might be next summer. I’m screen-testing and meeting George Miller,” Renner said in an interview with ModBee.

If ever Renner lands the role, I just hope they tweak the wardrobe a bit. I don’t think Renner’s looks would suit full-body leather.

GI Joe The Rise of Cobra

G.I Joe: The Rise of Cobra is just around the corner and Paramount Pictures is maximizing its publicity run before the film hits theaters. They’ve just released a press kit which includes some hi-res photos of selected scenes from the film (Sorry, we’ve resized them due to our meager bandwidth resources.)

The movie is directed by Stephen Sommers and packs an almost all-star cast with Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Christopher Eccleston, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Byung Hun Lee, Sienna Miller, Rachel Nichols, Ray Park, Jonathan Pryce, Saïd Taghmaoui, Channing Tatum, Marlon Wayans and Dennis Quaid.

Let’s start things of with the uber shmexy pictures of Sienna Miller as The Baroness.

Superhero Hype just came out with a couple of pictures from the Iron Man 2 set.

This first one shows Robert Downey Jr. (who play Tony Stark/Iron Man) looking over a mock-up model of some place. Can’t quite make out the details but it’s supposed to be the plans for the Stark Expo complex.

Iron Man 2 Set Pictres

This second one shows him working on his computer. Visible behind him are his armor suits! These include the original Mark I armor, the tattered Mark III armor from the last movie, a new one which looks like a pretty streamlined and stripped-down armor. We’re expecting War Machine in this movie so feel free to speculate what’s with silver Mark II costume.

Iron Man Set Pictures

Accompanying the pictures are some juicy tidbits from the set that hints on what can be in store for us in the movie like the blueprint for Captain America’s shield and a map of Antarctica. Iron Man is considered as a buildup for the other Avengers movies set to be released in 2011 and 2012.
