Densha Otoko

It’s quite interesting that more often than not geeks and Valentine’s usually just don’t mix. I just don’t know if we here over at Sugoi Stuff are just geeky enough since most of us aren’t single. Still, for those who had a chilly Valentine’s Day, at least some of us can relate to the plight of being geeky and lonely on Valentine’s. But do we really have to rub it in? Hehe.

Who’d want to date an otaku anyway? Let’s face it. Not all otakus can be as sweet and endearing as Densha Otoko. The otaku profile isn’t an interesting prospect for some hot Valentine’s Day/Night escapades, right? Who’d want to be seen a pimply-faced and obese/wafer-thin geek in a baduy get-up, right?

Okay, so enough otaku bashing for now and let’s try to look at some upsides to dating one.

I am getting old. Why I forgot about yesterday being White Day is beyond my comprehension.

Valentine’s Day cards from jerks

By Alex on February 16, 2007

Stumbled upon these amazing “Valentine cards” that jerks would have a blast giving out. No Hallmark moments for these guys. Hehehe.

You'd be purrfect if you lost 15 pounds.

See more of these cards at Cracked.com.

Here’s an interesting thing pointed out by a redditor on reddit. It even reached the number spot.

The buzz came from the missing “L” in the company’s holiday logo making “Google” look like “Googe.”

Google logo looking like 'Googe'

But this other guy points it out that there’s a poet named Barnabe Googe, who’s known for some cheesy lines. Some other think it’s the artist’s boo-boo.

For the hundreds of other (conspiracy) theories on why the heck Google put in something that looks like “Googe,” visit its reddit thread.

Now should this be another reason to hate Valentine’s? For the good laugh, maybe not.

Valentine’s Day, the other side

By Kyameel on February 14, 2007

While my colleague Alex hates Valentine’s Day, I welcome it with open arms. I don’t really celebrate it, but it’s comforting to know that it’s there.

The color red, hearts, cupids, roses, chocolates– Valentine’s Day has been either:

+ Created by Capitalists for sentimental consumers, or
+ Created by people who desire what they don’t have…

It can be a cliché, a tiring once a year exploitation of our hard-earned money and feelings– But face it, it’s here. Whether you like it or not, Valentine’s Day will come and go once every year.

It gives people a reason to do something for the ones they truly care about but aren’t able to! It can be a bad excuse but… Look at it this way, when you have a crush and you can be really shy, at least you have an excuse that you can finally tell him/her or something of the sort.

It gives people a reason to do something for their relationships. They try to fix their problems, just in time for the holiday. Even if in the next day, it turns out that the actions are futile.

Okay… Maybe I’m not making a sound argument right now, but it can be true– It gives us a reason to do something special for our love ones and actually get away with it. You catch my drift? Or I’m not really making sense here?

=sigh=

My point is, Valentine’s Day is not just for the hyped, but for also those who truly love. The only thing is, I just hope it doesn’t end up just once a year.

Yup, I hate Valentine’s Day

By Alex on February 14, 2007

You’ve got to hate Valentine’s Day. I do. I really wonder why such a high premium is given to February 14. What’s the big fuss about it. Who’s that St. Valentine anyway? And isn’t it all rooted to fertility rituals and (pagan?) orgiastic feasts? Call me some hard-@$$ grouch, but for me, Valentine’s Day is three things:

  • A day when one rose gets to be more valuable than gasoline
  • The one “holiday” dedicated to promiscuous sex
  • Thus condom manufacturers and motel operators have a field day

Not that I am one of those sour-graping, no-date-on-Valentine’s, blogging wanker that bashes the lover’s holiday. I just plain hate it. Here’s a list of why I do.
